明基电通于2005年7月宣布收购德国西门子手机事业，为历年来亚洲最大规模收购行动之一。西门子为世界知名手机品牌（二○○四年全球市场第四位，销售量近五千万支手机），全球有两千多位工程师，分布在中国、德国、丹麦、巴西与美国等地，其中有六百多位位于北京及上海的研发中心。
在2005年10月1日以后，明基已完全接收西门子手机部门的人员与设备，就研发人数而言，成长了将近三倍。同时明基也将拥有西门子的手机专利，如此更加奠定明基在3G及先进技术上的竞争能力，将使BenQ成为全球第四大手机品牌、中国第一大手机科技公司，合并后年营收将超过美金一百亿元。
